La septaria es una concreción sedimentaria formada principalmente por calcita, aragonito y caliza, atravesada por una red característica de fracturas naturales (septos) que se rellenan posteriormente con minerales cristalizados. Estas grietas se originan durante la compactación y deshidratación del sedimento en el fondo marino, y más tarde son cementadas por soluciones ricas en carbonato cálcico. El contraste entre el núcleo marrón o beige (matriz calcárea) y las vetas claras de calcita es el rasgo visual más distintivo de este material. Su dureza es heterogénea, oscilando entre 3 y 4 en la escala de Mohs, con brillo mate en la matriz y vítreo en las zonas cristalizadas.
