El jaspe rojo es una variedad opaca y compacta de calcedonia, forma microcristalina del cuarzo (SiO₂), cuya coloración roja intensa se debe a la presencia de óxidos de hierro, principalmente hematites, finamente dispersos en la matriz silícea. Presenta una textura homogénea, grano muy fino y un brillo mate a ceroso, con una dureza de 6,5 a 7 en la escala de Mohs, lo que lo convierte en una piedra resistente y estable.
