El ojo de tigre es una variedad fibrosa del cuarzo (SiO₂) que se origina a partir de la pseudomorfosis de la crocidolita, un mineral del grupo de los anfíboles. Durante este proceso, las fibras originales de crocidolita son reemplazadas por sílice, conservando su estructura y dando lugar al fenómeno óptico conocido como chatoyancia: un reflejo dorado que se desplaza bajo la luz, semejante al brillo del ojo de un felino.
