La riolita, comercialmente conocida como jaspe selva tropical, es una roca ígnea volcánica de composición rica en sílice, equivalente extrusivo del granito. A diferencia de los jaspes clásicos —que son calcedonias—, la riolita es una roca formada por el enfriamiento rápido de lavas viscosas, lo que genera una textura de grano fino con estructuras internas complejas. Su aspecto característico, con manchas orbiculares, vetas irregulares y contrastes verdes, ocres, marrones y crema, se debe a la combinación de feldespatos, cuarzo microcristalino y minerales ferromagnesianos alterados. Presenta una dureza aproximada de 6 a 7 en la escala de Mohs, con brillo mate a ligeramente ceroso.
