La ágata musgo roja es una variedad de calcedonia (SiO₂ microcristalino) caracterizada por la presencia de inclusiones dendríticas y una matriz de tonalidad rojiza, originada por la dispersión de óxidos de hierro (principalmente hematites) dentro de la sílice. A diferencia del ágata musgo verde —donde predominan cloritas o minerales ricos en manganeso—, en esta variedad el hierro domina el cromatismo, dando lugar a fondos que van del rojo óxido al terracota translúcido. Su dureza es de 6,5–7 en la escala de Mohs, con brillo ceroso a vítreo y una estructura compacta y muy estable.
