La ágata bandeada es una variedad de calcedonia, forma microcristalina del cuarzo (SiO₂), caracterizada por la presencia de bandas concéntricas o paralelas de distintos colores y grados de transparencia. Estas bandas se forman por la precipitación rítmica de sílice dentro de cavidades volcánicas, donde los cambios en la composición química, la temperatura o la presión generan capas sucesivas bien definidas. Su dureza oscila entre 6,5 y 7 en la escala de Mohs, con brillo ceroso a vítreo y una estructura compacta y muy estable.
