El cuarzo ahumado es una variedad del cuarzo (SiO₂) cuyo color, que va del gris translúcido al marrón profundo, se origina por la radiación natural que actúa sobre centros de color asociados a trazas de aluminio en su estructura cristalina. Este proceso no altera la composición química del mineral, pero sí modifica su capacidad de absorción de la luz, generando su tonalidad característica. Presenta una dureza de 7 en la escala de Mohs, brillo vítreo y una estructura muy estable.
