La labradorita es un feldespato plagioclasa de composición intermedia entre albita y anortita, célebre por su fenómeno óptico característico: la labradorescencia. Este efecto, una iridiscencia azul, verde o dorada que se desplaza con el movimiento, se produce por la interferencia de la luz entre delgadas láminas internas del cristal. Con una dureza de 6 a 6,5 en la escala de Mohs y brillo vítreo, la labradorita combina resistencia moderada con una belleza cambiante. En forma de torre, su estructura pulida concentra los reflejos como destellos atrapados bajo la superficie, recordando auroras boreales suspendidas en piedra.

Se forma en rocas ígneas y metamórficas, especialmente en basaltos y gabros, donde el enfriamiento lento permite el desarrollo de sus estructuras laminares. Los ejemplares de mayor calidad provienen de Madagascar, Finlandia y Canadá, conocidos por su intensidad cromática.
