La esmeralda es la variedad verde del berilo (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈), cuyo color característico se debe a la presencia de cromo y, en algunos casos, vanadio en su estructura cristalina. Cristaliza en el sistema hexagonal, formando prismas de sección hexagonal, aunque en ejemplares en bruto y en matriz suele aparecer como cristales incompletos o parcialmente embebidos. La esmeralda presenta una dureza de 7,5 a 8 en la escala de Mohs, pero una tenacidad baja, debido a la abundancia de fracturas internas naturales.

En esta pieza, la esmeralda aparece en matriz de esquisto, una roca metamórfica de grano fino a medio, rica en micas, que se forma bajo condiciones de alta presión y temperatura. Esta asociación es típica de los principales yacimientos de esmeralda, especialmente en Colombia y Brasil, donde las esmeraldas crecen en vetas hidrotermales que atraviesan rocas metamórficas. El contraste entre el verde intenso del berilo y la textura oscura y laminada del esquisto permite observar claramente el contexto geológico de formación. Desde la Antigüedad, las esmeraldas han sido valoradas no solo como gemas, sino también como objetos de estudio por su compleja génesis geológica.

La esmeralda en matriz de esquisto es una pieza más frágil de lo que su dureza podría sugerir, debido a sus fracturas internas y a la naturaleza de la roca hospedante.

No deben emplearse productos químicos, alcohol ni limpiadores domésticos, ya que pueden penetrar en las fracturas naturales del berilo o alterar la matriz de esquisto.
