La piedra luna es una variedad de feldespato potásico, principalmente ortoclasa–adularia, cuya característica más distintiva es la adularescencia: un brillo lechoso o azulado que parece desplazarse bajo la superficie al incidir la luz. Este fenómeno óptico se debe a la interferencia de la luz entre finísimas láminas internas de feldespatos con distinta composición, formadas durante el enfriamiento lento del mineral. Presenta una dureza de 6 a 6,5 en la escala de Mohs, brillo vítreo a sedoso y una estructura con exfoliación perfecta, rasgo típico de los feldespatos. En forma de esfera, la adularescencia se manifiesta de manera continua y envolvente, permitiendo apreciar el efecto óptico desde cualquier ángulo con una suavidad homogénea.
